Folk, Fiddle and Feet!

An afternoon with Lissa Schneckenburger, Nic Gareiss, and Garrett Cameron

Vermont-based fiddler and composer Lissa Schneckenburger, step dancer Nic Gareiss, and multi-instrumentalist Garrett Cameron join forces to create music that’s equal parts rooted tradition and fearless exploration. Together, they craft concerts full of rhythm, melody, improvisation, and joyful spontaneity—
music that feels grounded, adventurous, and always alive in the moment.

Lissa’s recent burst of writing—born during the pandemic and captured on her 2023 album Falling Forward—highlights her signature blend of driving New England fiddle tunes and reflective, original compositions.

One of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch,” Nic Gareiss (he/they) is swiftly becoming recognized for his singular voice in the realm of dance, music, and the traditional arts. Informed by 25 years of ethnographic study and performance, Gareiss’ work draws from many percussive dance practices to weave together a technique facilitating his love of improvisation; clog, flatfoot, and step dance vocabulary; and musical collaboration.

Garrett brings his love of pulse, smushed tonalities, and the intersection of Scottish/Cape Breton traditions with Minimalism and free improv, performing on mandolin, vibraphone, and whatever else the moment calls for.

Appalachian Flatfooting Workshop (for movers of all experience) 2pm- 3pm

Play folk music with your feet! Flatfooting is a solo form of improvised percussive dance originating in the Appalachian

mountains of what some people call the United States, with sonic and gestural connections to West African, Indigenous, and Western European dance. Using the toe, heel, and ball of the foot to strike and slide across the floor, flatfooting articulates the rhythms of old time fiddle and banjo tunes. Wear comfortable clothes and smooth-soled supportive shoes with a low heel or no heel for this class.

Concert 4pm- 6
