Down East Singers and Halcyon will present "Rachmaninoff & Lime City" on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2 P.M. at Rockport Opera House, 6 Central St., Rockport. The program will begin with Gustav Holst's "On this day earth shall ring," for chorus, string quartet, piano and handbells. Down East Singers will perform selected movements from Sergei Rachmaninoff's "Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom," a work that was suppressed by the Soviet government for seventy years and brought back to Russia by conductor Anthony Antolini in 1988.
Halcyon will perform works by Philip Glass, Hildegard von Bingen and Erik Satie to accompany Luke Fatora's documentary film "Lime City" celebrating the city of Rockland's maritime history.
The concert will conclude with Ralph Vaughan Williams's "Fantasia on Christmas Carols," with tenor soloist Hayden Sears, Down East Singers, handbells, Jennifer McIvor, pianist, Halcyon string players Josie Davis, Luke Fatora, Colin Wheatley and Matthew Smith.
